The World Financial Group (WFG)-sponsored USA Luge team ended its 2010-11 season with their National Seeding races on March 6 in Lake Placid, NY. These races, along with the National Championships held on March 5, help determine the make up of the team next season.
The women’s team had an exciting finish. Four-time National Champion – with her win at the National Championship the previous day – and 2009 World Champion Erin Hamlin finished the best with a two-race time of 1:29.739. Less than a second behind her was Emily Sweeney with a second place finish of 1:30.524. Taking bronze was Summer Britcher with a time of 1:30.640. World Financial Group (WFG)-adopted athlete Ashley Walden came in fourth with a time of 1:30.773. With their one-two finish, Erin and Emily have qualified for next season’s team.
On the men’s team, Chris Mazdzer continued his winning streak with a two-slide time of 1:46.901. World Financial Group (WFG)-adopted athlete Bengt Walden was very close with a second place finish of 1:46.943, just 0.042 seconds behind Chris. Trent Matheson took the bronze with a time of 1:47.369. Chris and Bengt have qualified for next season’s team.
And in Doubles sliding, Jacob Hyrns and Andrew Sherk won the top seed with a two-race time of 1:30.064. The previous day’s winners in the National Champions, Matt Mortensen and Preston Griffall, took second with a time of 1:30.066- just 0.002 seconds behind Jacob and Andrew. Shane Hook and Zac Clark came in third with a time of 1:32.052. Jacob, Andrew, Matt and Preston have all qualified for next season’s team.
For now, the World Financial Group (WFG)-sponsored USA Luge team enters their off-season. But they will continue to train throughout the year, leading to the official start of their pre-season this summer. Keep reading wfgsports.com for all the latest on “the fastest sport on ice!”
