On a cold afternoon in Utah Olympic Park, USA Luge athlete Emily Sweeney flashed the “Sweeney Smile” as she received the Gold Medal at the 2013 World Junior Luge Championships for her outstanding performance against opponents Caroline von Schleinitz (Silver) and Natalie Burkhardt (Bronze). This honor is USA Luge’s 21st World Junior/World Championship Gold Medal.
Sweeney, 19, a Suffield, Conn. native and member of the Army National Guard, recalls the difficult training she endured just before the competition. “I had pretty rough training this week. It was inconsistent. I’d thrown down some good runs but I had a lot of issues, too. I had that feeling I was goingto pull it together for race day. I’ve never had that feeling before and it happened.”
World Financial Group, a proud sponsor of USA Luge, congratulates Emily on her win!
