Let’s face it: children tend to like winter better than adults. While an adult gets a chill when he or she see snow that needs shoveling or icy roads, children see snowman building, sledding down hills or snowball making (and throwing). But a World Financial Group (WFG) associate and his family have found a place where kids – from infants to age 8 – can still have fun during the winter but indoors instead of out.
The fun and learning can be found at The Trailhead Children’s Discovery Museum, located at the base of Mt. Crested Butte in Gunnison Valley, Colorado. The organization, formed in 2008, was originally founded by a group of parents who recognized the need for a place for young children to learn and creatively play, especially during the long cold Colorado winters. The museum provides a place “to nourish the imagination and creativity of children by appealing to their sense of curiosity and fun.” Activities range from arts and crafts to cooking classes and from learning a new language to a fun a “mad science” program as well as music education.
World Financial Group (WFG) SMD Boyd Pederson and his wife Sharalee thought this organization was a fantastic opportunity to give back to their local community. The parents of three young children, the Pedersons found the museum offers the chance for them to “grow outside of the comfort of our business life to help people.” The couple has volunteered their services as story readers, assisted in obtaining a pirate ship theater and much more. Beginning in May, thanks to funding by the Pedersons and The WFG Foundation, children at the museum will be able to participate in a “Wild Eyes Nature Safari” that will help children establish a sense of nature and themselves.
This WFG couple has found volunteering for the Trailhead Children’s Discovery Museum a great and easy way to lend time to a unique non-profit organization. As Sharalee told WFG Gives Back, “The world doesn’t become a better place unless we get involved.”
