To be called an All-Star at anything is a major accomplishment. Be it in the world of academics, performance or athletics, being known as an "all-star" carries a gravitas that can not be taken away from you. All-Stars are usually selected by a group of peers or a learned body, such as a group of sports writers. WFG has its share of all-stars all throughout North America. And our Nanaimo Clippers have a pair of All-Stars in the British Columbia Hockey League. Per the Nanaimo Daily News, team captain Russell Goodman and defenseman Anders Franzon have been selected to represent the Coastal Conference in the BCHL All-Star game this coming January 14.
Goodman, who not too long ago celebrated his 20th birthday, currently leads the Clippers in goals (10) and assists (16). Although selected to play in last year's squad, injuries forced him to sit out the game while four other Clippers represented the team. Franzon, a rookie from New York, has four goals, seven assists and only eleven penalty minutes this season. Both players will start warming up for their All-Star duties tonight at the Frank Crane Arena against the Cowichan Capitals.
To my knowledge, this is the first time World Financial Group has ever had anyone at an All-Star Game. Well, playing in one, anyway. Let's wish these young men the best of luck and we'll see you on the ice!
