The Ferbey 4, proudly sponsored by World Financial Group, entered the 2009 World Cup of Curling this past weekend at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga, ON. This event serves as one of many warm up tournaments for the “Roar of the Rings” scheduled in December that will help determine who represents Canada in the 2010 Olympic games.
Their first match in the World Cup was Wednesday opposite Fengchun Wang’s rink from Harbin, China. With the hammer, Randy and his rink slid to a 4-2 victory in six ends.
First up on Thursday for WFG’s curling team was a match against Niklas Edin and his rink from Karlstad, Sweden. The Swedes provided a challenge for our guys from Edmonton. The game was close until the final end – when Edin scored for rocks – but, despite having the hammer, the Ferbey 4 fell to Edin’s rank 8-3 in seven ends.
Right after their first defeat, the Ferbey 4 saw a very familiar opponent in Kevin Koe’s rink, also from Edmonton, who, like the Ferbey 4, has also pre-qualified for the “Roar”. Although extra ends were needed to determine the outcome, Koe’s team had the hammer and slid by with a 7-6 defeat of the men in the WFG curling shirts.
Friday’s early action would see Randy, David, Scott and Marcel take on Thomas Ulsrud’s rink from Oslo, Norway. So far this season, early morning action for the Ferbey 4 had proven to be victorious. Alas, despite the Ferbey 4 having the hammer, Ulsrud outscored our WFG rink 7-4 in six ends.
Immediately after this match, Randy and the guys moved on to take on Thomas Dufour and his team from Chamonix, France. Although Thomas had the hammer, the Ferbeys exploded to an early lead and would not let go until they won 6-4, with three of their rocks scored in the fourth end.
Their last opponent of the round robin portion of the World Cup was against the fellow Edmonton rink of Kevin Martin, another “Roar” pre-qualifier. While the WFG “Kings of Canadian Curling” had the hammer, Martin’s rink took eight ends to win 6-3 and knock the Ferbey 4 out of the World Cup.
But Randy, David, Scott and Marcel won’t be resting long. Up next for World Financial Group’s curling rink is the Cactus Pheasant Classic, held in Brooks, AB, starting on the October 29. Let’s wish the Ferbey 4 all the best in this and future matches.
