Canadian curling sensations Team Ferbey, proudly sponsored by World Financial Group, recently participated in the Swiss Chalet National, the second stop in the Grand Slam of Curling, starting on Dec. 15. This tournament has been kind to Randy Ferbey, Brad Gushue, Mark Nichols and Ryan Fry in the past. Would it remain so?
Their first draw on Wednesday night certainly was. Their opponent was Pat Simmons’s rink from Regina, SK. With the hammer, our guys in the WFG curling uniforms needed only six ends to win this one 7-2. Brad and Mark tied for the match’s best efficiency with 96%.
Thursday morning saw another win. This time, the opponent was Brent Bawel’s rink out of Calgary. Although Brent had the hammer, Team Ferbey took this match 5-3 in eight ends. Brad led all the competitors with an 88% accuracy score. Randy was close behind with 87%. But their Thursday evening match would not be as fortunate. Our WFG-sponsored curling rink took on Wayne Middaugh and his rink from Toronto and lost 8-3 in five ends.
Early Friday afternoon saw Randy and the guys take on Kevin Koe’s rink out of Edmonton. Koe had the hammer and used it to eke out a 5-4 victory over our team in eight ends. Brad had the highest accuracy rating for Team Ferbey with 92%. Friday evening’s opponent was Don Walchuk’s rink, also from Edmonton. Despite our guys having the hammer, Team Ferbey fell to team Walchuk 7-5 in seven ends. With a 2-3 record in the Round Robin, our WFG-sponsored team ended their run in The National here.
But fear not, Ferbey fans. Randy, Brad, Mark and Ryan will return to the house in 2011. Keep reading wfgsports.com for all the latest on our favorite curling rink!
