After the postponement of the Badlands Dinosaur Derby in Drumheller, Alberta because of inclement weather, the 2011 World Professional Chuckwagon Association (WPCA) resumed its 2011 season with the North American Chuckwagon Championship in High River, Alberta. Among the drivers seeking the championship at the event, which ran from June 23-26, was World Financial Group (WFG)-sponsored chuckwagon driver Buddy Bensmiller. Over the four days he raced Kirk Sutherland, Colt Cosgrave and John Walters in his quest for the title.
The first day of the North American Chuckwagon championship was not the best for Buddy. In the fifth heat of the day, Buddy and the WFG wagon finished fourth with a time of 1:19.68. However, Buddy did earn 17 points in the standings for his penalty free race.
Day two had Buddy racing the WFG-tarped wagon in the sixth heat of the day. Buddy finished fourth with a time of 1:22.52, and one of his outriders knocked over a barrel, which caused Buddy to be assessed a penalty and only earn five championship points.
On the third day in the fifth heat, Buddy and the blue and white WFG wagon crossed the finish line first with a time of 1:16.98. For his victory as well as a penalty free race, Buddy earned 27 points.
The final day of racing in High River saw Buddy competing in the sixth heat. He pulled the WFG wagon to a fourth-place finish in his heat with a time of 1:18.52. He also earned 34 points for his penalty free drive.
In the North American Chuckwagon Championship, Buddy finished 23rd overall with a total time of 5:17.70 and 83 points. He still ranks in the Top 20 in the world standings with 253 overall points. Buddy will next compete in “The Championship” at the Ponoka Stampede in Ponoka, Alberta beginning June 28.
