Over this past Thanksgiving weekend, the USA Luge team met in their first World Cup race. We at World Financial Group are proud to report results from the race in Igls, Austria.
In the doubles competition, Italians Gerhard Plankensteiner and Oswald Haselrieder won the gold with a track record of 1:19.039. Austrian teams took silver and bronze. The USA representatives, Mark Grimmette and Brian Martin, finished eleventh with a combined time of 1:19.851. American teammates Christian Niccum and Dan Joye finished right behind them.
On the women's side, the German team swept the medal stand, keeping our Erin Hamlin of Remsen, NY, just barely off the medal stand. Regardless, her finish of 1:20.96 qualifies her for the World Champions in Lake Placid, NY. Also showing good runs in Igls were Julia Clukey and Ashley Walden.
The men also saw some action. Bengt Walden placed 21st, the highest amongst the USA Luge men's team. His teammates, Tony Benshoof and Christopher Mazder, finished 24th and 26th respectively.
This weekend, the USA Luge team travels to the Latvian town of Sigulda for the second Nations and World's Cup races. All coverage can be found at Universal Sports, either live, streaming or archived. Way to go team!
