Competitive sailing is an exciting sporting event and has long been a part of the Summer Olympic Games and celebrated in the America’s Cup. It also is a major part of the World Police & Fire Games in which Johns Creek (GA) Firefighter Robert (Bob) Scott is competing. World Financial Group (WFG) is proud to support Bob in achieving his goal to sail solo in these world games.
Bob will race a LASER class boat, pictured below, during the sailing competition, which will take place from Aug. 29 – 31 at the US Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, NY. Bob, a 22-year veteran of the American Fire Service, is a charter member of the Johns Creek Fire Department with the rank of Firefighter II. Previously, he was a lieutenant with the Henry County (GA) Fire Department. Since 1996, Bob has been a competitive sailor both with a crew and solo. Bob’s crew is currently ranked sixth overall in the United States, and Bob has placed in the top three at 24 different competitions, winning 15 of them!
The World Police & Fire Games is an athletic competition held every two years since 1985. New York is hosting this year’s event, which begins August 26 and ends September 5. More than 18,000 police officers and firefighters from 70 countries compete in the games, making it the third largest athletic competition in the world. Athletes compete in 65 sporting events over a ten-day period that range from baseball and basketball to swimming, skeet shooting and darts. There’s even a “toughest competitor alive” event, which includes a 5K Cross Country run, shot put, 100 meter dash, 100 meter swim, 20-foot rope climb as well as bench press, pull ups and obstacle course events. This year’s closing ceremonies will include a candlelight vigil to remember those fallen on 9/11.
